American Homestead of the Original Ancient Chinese Purebred Pug Heritage Preservationists & The
Farmstead of Our European Gentle Giants

Walk The Line Pug Ranch (WTL) & Hard Rock Farm (HRF) are not a commercial kennel but a private family’s homestead and farmstead. Our dogs live in a healthy, enriched combined Human and dog family-oriented environment, receiving round-the-clock care, socialization, and love.

Our Family’s Commitment

At our private New York State hobby breeding homestead & farmstead, we are passionately dedicated to the preservation, health, and responsible breeding of three remarkable purebred dog breeds: the ancient Chinese Pug, the majestic Great Pyrenees, and the noble Saint Bernard.

  • Pugs, cherished for their playful and affectionate nature, thrive in our carefully maintained indoor setting.
  • Saint Bernards, renowned for their gentle temperament and protective instincts, are raised to embody strength, kindness, and loyalty.
  • Great Pyrenees, naturally skilled in guarding livestock and families alike, are bred with an emphasis on their ancient working dog heritage.

Whether indoors or on our safe, well-guarded farmstead grounds, our dogs enjoy proper nutrition, exercise, companionship, and top-tier veterinary care beyond routine checkups. Every pup is raised to fit seamlessly into a loving and prepared forever home.

We specialize in the Original Ancient Chinese Purebred Pug, with a mission to preserve and enhance this beloved breed’s heritage.

WTL has successfully applied our well-learned Ancient Chinese Pure Breed Pug Breeding Method, a practice that continuously improves desirable Pug genetics while eliminating the undesirable—resulting in healthier, sturdier Pugs of exemplary quality. Since the year “2000”, Our passionate, studies, practices, and achievements have exceled us into recognition as a responsible Quality Pure Breed Pug Breeder, Caretaker, Therapy Dog Trainer, and Pug Health Care & DNA Expert, while also maintaining the Ongoing Preservation and Enhancement of the Original Ancient Chinese Pure Breed Pug Heritage and the Original Pug Breed Standard…./

This we do, in order to provide a superior quality, healthier and more durable Pug Breed, for the fulfillment of adopting them as Companions into “Pug Loving” Family’s Homes, in order to induce the joyful atmosphere and loving companionship that each and every Pug inevitably brings into any responsible and deserving home…./ ….

Our Expanding Mission

Building on our expertise, WTL remains active in promoting Pure Breed White and Brindle Pugs, developed over 20 years of dedicated genetic study. As part of WTL’s continuous growth, HRF now proudly extends our commitment of responsible breeding and superior health care to Saint Bernard’s and Great Pyrenees, bred with equal dedication to preserving their historical lineage. These majestic breeds known for their intelligence, have their own unique temperament and strengths, making them ideal companions for families, therapy work, and even livestock protection in the case of Great Pyrenees. Just as WTL does with Pugs, HRF focuses on maintaining their original breed characteristics by selective breeding and dedicated health care practices, enhancing their genetics, and ensuring they remain the strong, well-tempered companions they were meant to be.

Pugs: Ancient Charm, Modern Companions

The Pug is an ancient breed originating in China around 400 B.C., where it was prized as a companion to emperors and often lived under royal protection. These cherished dogs later spread to Japan, Russia, and eventually to Europe in the 16th century, capturing the hearts of royalty such as Queen Victoria of England and Prince William of Orange. Pugs are small, compact dogs typically weighing between 14 to 18 pounds, with a short, glossy coat that comes in fawn, black, silver, or apricot. They are instantly recognizable by their wrinkled, flat-muzzled faces, expressive eyes, and curled tails. Personality-wise, Pugs are known for being charming, affectionate, and sociable—playful but dignified companions who adapt well to various living environments. Fun fact: Chinese breeders intentionally shaped the wrinkles on a Pug’s forehead to resemble the character for “prince” (王), further emphasizing their royal legacy.

Great Pyrenees: Noble Livestock Guardians

Great Pyrenees are instinctively excellent farm guard dogs and are widely used as livestock guardian dogs (LGDs). They were originally bred in the Pyrenees Mountains between France and Spain to protect flocks from predators like wolves and bears. Their territorial nature, strong protective instincts, and nocturnal vigilance make them ideal for farm settings. While they are also great home guardians and protectors of their Human family, they are best suited for farm homesteads and prefer the outdoors where they can roam freely and protect livestock. They are known for their gentle temperament with animals
and children, but they are fiercely defensive against outside threats

Saint Bernards: Courageous Companions

Saint Bernard’s are better suited as house guard dogs rather than farm guard dogs. They were originally bred for Human rescue work by the hospice of the Great ST Bernard Pass on the Italian-Swiss border. While they have a large, intimidating presence and a deep bark that easily deters intruders. Their gentle temperament towards their Human family makes them excellent family dogs and loyal companions, while they also have strong instincts and excel at watchful protection of their Human family against any outside threats. Saints require 24/7 outdoor access but often prefer spending time indoors.

Welcome To;

“The Pug Breed”

______________________________________________________

Is a Pug the right Breed for you, Or Are You Crazy….! Let’s find out..! Following the brief “Pug Characteristics” introduction directly below, Please read the article that follows, “Pug Personality Traits – Is This Type Of Dog For You?” From The I-Love-Pugs.com Web Site… Lastly, at the bottom of the page is a brief article on the Pug Breed’s “Origin & History” by PugVillage.com…

====================================

” Crazy”- By The Great Patsy Cline… Her performance was first broadcast on television on February 22, 1962, from a recording of her live performance February 7, 1962 from WSMV-TV, 5700 Knob Rd, Nashville TN, for the Pet Milk TV Grand Ole Opry…

================================================

Pug Characteristics

================================================

Size & Appearance

Pugs are small and stocky… They stand about 10–13 inches (25–33 cm) tall at the shoulder and weigh roughly 14–18 pounds (6–8 kg)… This breed is instantly recognizable by its wrinkled, short-muzzled face, large round dark eyes, and a tightly curled tail over the back… Their coat is short, smooth, and glossy, the most common color being fawn with apricot and silver variations, all with a black mask… The second most common color being black and silver black, both again with a black mask… There are also a few original pure breed rare colors specifically all white with a white mask, and brindle with a black mask… Beware of these rare colors as unscrupulous breeders often mix breeds in order to acquire these rare colors… Their facial wrinkles and bold expressive eyes often give Pugs a comical or concerned expression that many find endearing...

Temperament

Pugs are affectionate, playful, and often downright charming… They thrive on human companionship and are known for being social and good with children… A Pug’s personality is typically described as even-tempered and loving… They love to lounge in a lap just as much as they enjoy a spurts of zoomies around the living room… Their alert and loyal nature also makes them good little watchdogs (they will bark to announce visitors), but overall they are not excessive barkers...

Living Needs

Adaptable and city-friendly, pugs can thrive in apartments or smaller homes since they don’t require large spaces or intense exercise… Short daily walks and indoor play sessions usually suffice to keep them healthy and happy… However, pugs do not tolerate extreme temperatures well… Because of their brachycephalic (short-nosed) anatomy, they are prone to breathing issues and can easily overheat in hot or humid weather… Owners must take care to keep pugs cool in summer and avoid strenuous activity during heat waves… Similarly, very cold weather can be hard on them due to their short coat…

Health & Care

Pugs have a few special care considerations… They shed quite a bit despite their short hair (fawns more than blacks) — in fact, many pugs have a double coat and will shed year-round (with heavier shedding during seasonal changes)… Regular brushing helps manage the loose fur… Those adorable facial wrinkles need gentle cleaning and drying to prevent skin infections… It’s also important to keep their eyes safe and protected as they are prone to injury due to the Breed being Brachycephalic, no snoot… Their prominent eyes are also easily irritated often leading to runny eyes and even certain Disease… Pugs tend to love food, so owners should watch their diet to prevent obesity, which can worsen breathing problems… With good care, a pug can live about 13–15 years on average, providing plenty of time for love and laughter with these little clowns of the dog world...

Pug Personality Traits – Is This Type of Dog for You?

We think that Pugs are among the cutest breeds on earth. However, there are definite Pug Personality Traits that you should be aware. Once you know about these characteristics you’ll be in a better position to understand whether or not this type of dog is for you.

The best thing to do is to magnify each of the negatives and make an honest assessment of whether this trait will bother you or not. It’s also important to understand whether the trait is a behavior that can controlled or a characteristic of the breed that is present in Pugs and will be a part of both of your lives going forward.

For example, if you are a very neat person who can’t stand a messy house it is probably wise to consider whether the amount of shedding that your little friend will do will bother you. Although this isn’t really part of the dog’s personality, the fact is that they shed. They shed a lot. You should know that going in and make a serious attempt to determine whether or not that will bother you in the future. We think that shedding is a small price to pay for the amount of love and companionship a Pug brings into your life. But we also don’t mind running the vacuum cleaner quite often although our little Pug isn’t too fond of the contraption.

On the other hand, barking is one of the more common Pug personality traits. Not every Pug is a constant barker and it is behavior that can be controlled with some effort. You should understand that it takes a lot of effort and patience and if the Pug thinks he or you are in danger – the chances are he will forget about his training and bark until the danger has disappeared. For many, that is an admirable trait.

There is no dog breed that is perfect for everyone. We’ll try to review the prominent traits for the average Pug and make some observations on who might find a Pug to be an enjoyable companion and who might find this little guy more trouble than they’re worth. Keep in mind that the decision is yours and you can choose to ignore our advice completely. After all, when you fall in love with a Pug it can be forever. They’re awfully cute!

The Pug Personality traits that come to mind first are companionship and loyalty. This dog was made to be by their owner’s side. And while this sounds nice, Pugs are known to take this to the extreme. Just be prepared. They will follow you around constantly and want your attention all of the time. Why? Who knows? It’s just the way they are. They are willing to give you all of their attention so they probably figure why wouldn’t you be willing to do the same for them? So the key in understanding this so that there is a happy pairing between Pug and owner is to realize all the implications of this trait.

If you’re not home a lot, a Pug may not be a great choice for a dog. It really isn’t fair to them. They thrive on companionship. They’ll whimper when you leave and go crazy when you get home. If you’re lonely, you probably can’t do better than a Pug for a friend. They’ll be with you day and night and they will be your biggest fan. If you’re looking for love, affection, loyalty and CONSTANT companionship then consider one of these little dogs. Who said you can’t buy friendship? You come pretty close when you buy a Pug! It is one of the most endearing Pug personality traits. And we know of almost nothing else that will brighten up someone’s life like a Pug. Do you know someone who lives alone and might benefit from a cute, friendly and loyal companion? Consider a Pug because, in our opinion they are a perfect Therapy Dog for certain conditions. We are not experts in this field by any means and we strongly suggest you seek out professional advice but for conditions that would benefit from social stimulation like dementia, depression and even Attention Deficit Syndrome, you may want to consider one these adorable little dogs as a possibility. We happen to think that the Pug personality traits are a perfect fit for helping people in this kind of situation. And we can think of no dog that would be happier providing this service. The Pug is a wonderful dog and companion.

Is A Pug For You?

Although we think everyone should have a Pug in their life, it may not make sense for everyone. There are some things to keep in mind. We can point out some of the things we’ve learned but, in the end, only you can be the judge of whether or not these adorable little dogs are right for you.

Pug Personality Traits – Are Pugs and Children A Good Mix? Pugs and children get along great and it is not uncommon for a child to fall in love with a Pug who is owned by somebody else. Not surprisingly, many of them end up with a Pug in their house at some point in their life. Sadly, Pug ownership is not for every child, so if you know of a boy or girl who longs for a Pug and can’t have one, consider a toy Pug. Another common question is whether a Pug trains easily. Although Pugs have been known to be a little stubborn, they are very intelligent and love to please their owner. That can be a perfect combination if you know what to do. To help you out, here is a free Pug Training Mini Course that we think you’ll find very beneficial.

Origin & History

Pugs have a very rich and amazing history that can be traced way back to 700 BC at the time of Confucius when they were known as lo-size. The breed is considered one of the oldest canine breeds today. There are many theories as to the Pug’s origin—one theory states that the breed is a descendant of the short-haired Pekingese; another theory postulates that the Pug is a cross of a small Bulldog; and, a third theory speculates it is a miniature form of the French Mastiff (Dogue de Bordeaux).

Aside from Tibetan monasteries, only members of the Chinese imperial household were allowed to own these small-nosed dogs who always stayed by their master’s side even during royal occasions when foreign guests were present. It is said that female pugs were held in high esteem so much so that they had the same rank with the wives of the emperor. This was true during the time of the great emperor Ling To (168-190 A.D.) who also ordered that his pugs be guarded by the palace’s soldiers and be fed with only the best food. He greatly loved his pugs that anyone who was caught attempting to steal a pug was meted a death sentence.

During the 16-17th centuries, Pugs became highly popular and were imported to Europe with the aid of the Dutch East India Company. In 1572, a pug named Pompey alerted his master, the Prince of Orange William the Silent, to the approach of the Spaniards thus saving his master’s life. As a result, the Pug was declared as the official dog of the House of Orange. When Prince William ascended to the throne, his pugs came to the ceremony adorned with orange ribbons.

Napoleon Bonaparte’s wife, Josephine, had a Pug named “Fortune”. On the night that they were wed, Josephine refused to sleep in their bed unless her Pug was allowed to sleep with them. It was her Pug whom she used to send secret messages to Napoleon when she was thrown in prison. Her secret messages were placed under the dog’s collar and delivered to her husband.

During the British invasion of China in 1860, they found Pugs in the Chinese Imperial Palace and brought them back to England. In 1886, England imported black pugs from China. Black Pugs were made fashionable by Lady Brassey.

Queen Victoria took a liking to the breed and she played an active role in their breeding. In fact she had a couple of Pugs that were named Minka, Venus, Fatima, Olga, and Pedro among others. It was Queen Victoria’s active involvement in the breeding of Pugs that helped established the Kennel Club in 1873.

The famous English painter, William Hogarth, was very much devoted to his Pugs that he included them in his paintings. One of the most famous is a self-portrait where he painted himself with his Pug.

The breed became very popular in Europe that they were the subjects of paintings of famous European artists. Many Pugs owned by royalty were fitted with matching suits and pants and rode on the front with the coachman.

It was in 1885 when the Pug was recognized by the AKC. Pugs were soon members of homes of many American families and participated in shows and competitions. Pugs have garnered awards in many international shows. In 1981, a pug named Dhandy’s Favorite Woodchuck became the only pug to win the Westminster Kennel Club show since 1877, the year when the show first started. In 2004, a pug named Double D Cinoblu’s Masterpiece became the World Champion of the World Dog Show held in Rio de Janiero, Brazil.

Long ago, the breed was known in China as lo chiang-sze which later on evolved to become lo-sze. As the pug were introduced to different parts of the world, its name also changed from place to place. In Holland, the Dutch had named the pug as “mopshond” meaning “to grumble”, “Doguillo in Spain, while in Germany it is called “mops” and in France the French calls it “carlin”. The name “pug” came about when some people found a similarity between the pug’s facial expression to that of a marmoset monkey called Pug, a most popular pet in 1700s.

It is said that Pugs (which still had a long full snoot & weighed up to 40-50 pounds) during this period, were recognized & used primarily as hunting dogs which were also only afforded to Royalty… The more modern version of the Pug with the (short snoot/mouth or Brachy Cephalic Head), were not posted until sometime in (600 B. C.) when prized by Chinese emperors, and then the Breed began to develop their desire as more of a lap dog of Royalty instead of a hunting dog… Pugs were then later brought to Europe in the 16th and 17th centuries by traders, even becoming the mascot of Holland’s royal House of Orange… Their long history as lapdogs for nobility speaks to their people-loving nature...

Registration & Pedigree Information

Walk The Line Pug’s and Hard Rock Farm’s Noble Giants litters are eligible for official registration based on their purebred heritage. Registrations may be processed through AKC Kennel Club. (United States) the United Kennel Club, (Internationally) CKC Kennel Club, (Canada) or the National General Kennel Club (China), (standard restricted use).

Registration papers are included as a standard part of our Puppy Adoption Packages, provided upon initial request and in compliance with the terms outlined in the case-specific WTL or HRF Adoption Contract. In instances where a spay/neuter agreement is required, registration documents will only be released upon full compliance with that agreement.

Once the adoptive family has submitted all required documentation and the puppy has reached the appropriate age (per the adoption agreement), registration papers are sent via regular U.S. Mail. Additionally, full pedigrees are available upon request and assessed case-by-case for an additional fee.

Commitment to Purebred Excellence

Our canines are strictly purebred, coming from bloodlines that are exceptionally healthy, free of disease, and devoid of congenital defects. Despite common misconceptions, hybrids and mixed breeds often introduce unpredictable and undesirable genetic complications. Only through a well-orchestrated and conscientious purebred breeding program can we ensure the healthiest, most immune-efficient, and genetically sound offspring.

Due to the widespread misuse and irresponsible breeding practices common in the industry, we rarely offer registration papers with breeding rights. However, unrestricted registration may be granted under special circumstances—reserved only for individuals who demonstrate, through our detailed Canine Adoption Application process, either a sound reason or a proven record of responsible breeding experience.

~ Testimonial by Lynda & Kevin Rouser, Massachusetts ~
“We started working with Walk The Line a year ago on the pre-adoption of two puppies. The level of attention and devotion they showed was unparalleled, as if we were the only adoptive family with whom they were working. Their knowledge about the breed and best health care practices are unsurpassed. The gallery was a constant source of delight and amazement as we watched our girls grow from newborns to the 10-wk old wonders we picked up in August, 2012. We could not be more pleased with our decision to pursue an adoption through Walk The Line; our girls are remarkably healthy, spunky, sweet-natured, and simply gorgeous. It was well worth the eight-hour drive to pick them up, and they were gracious enough to spend as much time as we needed to review the comprehensive binder and materials that are included as part of their adoption package. We do not hesitate in recommending and/or referring others to Walk The Line. Thanks for bringing so much joy into our lives! ”

The best of the best! Lynda
