Private NYS Hobby Pure Breed Pug, Great Pyrenees & Saint Bernard Breeder
American Homestead of the Original Ancient Chinese Purebred Pug Heritage Preservationists & The
Farmstead of Our European Gentle Giants

Walk The Line Pug Ranch (WTL) & Hard Rock Farm (HRF) are not a commercial kennel but a private family’s homestead and farmstead. Our dogs live in a healthy, enriched combined Human and dog family-oriented environment, receiving round-the-clock care, socialization, and love.

Our Family’s Commitment

At our private New York State hobby breeding homestead & farmstead, we are passionately dedicated to the preservation, health, and responsible breeding of three remarkable purebred dog breeds: the ancient Chinese Pug, the majestic Great Pyrenees, and the noble Saint Bernard.

  • Pugs, cherished for their playful and affectionate nature, thrive in our carefully maintained indoor setting.
  • Saint Bernards, renowned for their gentle temperament and protective instincts, are raised to embody strength, kindness, and loyalty.
  • Great Pyrenees, naturally skilled in guarding livestock and families alike, are bred with an emphasis on their ancient working dog heritage.

Whether indoors or on our safe, well-guarded farmstead grounds, our dogs enjoy proper nutrition, exercise, companionship, and top-tier veterinary care beyond routine checkups. Every pup is raised to fit seamlessly into a loving and prepared forever home.

We specialize in the Original Ancient Chinese Purebred Pug, with a mission to preserve and enhance this beloved breed’s heritage.

WTL has successfully applied our well-learned Ancient Chinese Pure Breed Pug Breeding Method, a practice that continuously improves desirable Pug genetics while eliminating the undesirable—resulting in healthier, sturdier Pugs of exemplary quality. Since the year “2000”, Our passionate, studies, practices, and achievements have exceled us into recognition as a responsible Quality Pure Breed Pug Breeder, Caretaker, Therapy Dog Trainer, and Pug Health Care & DNA Expert, while also maintaining the Ongoing Preservation and Enhancement of the Original Ancient Chinese Pure Breed Pug Heritage and the Original Pug Breed Standard…./

This we do, in order to provide a superior quality, healthier and more durable Pug Breed, for the fulfillment of adopting them as Companions into “Pug Loving” Family’s Homes, in order to induce the joyful atmosphere and loving companionship that each and every Pug inevitably brings into any responsible and deserving home…./ ….

Our Expanding Mission

Building on our expertise, WTL remains active in promoting Pure Breed White and Brindle Pugs, developed over 20 years of dedicated genetic study. As part of WTL’s continuous growth, HRF now proudly extends our commitment of responsible breeding and superior health care to Saint Bernard’s and Great Pyrenees, bred with equal dedication to preserving their historical lineage. These majestic breeds known for their intelligence, have their own unique temperament and strengths, making them ideal companions for families, therapy work, and even livestock protection in the case of Great Pyrenees. Just as WTL does with Pugs, HRF focuses on maintaining their original breed characteristics by selective breeding and dedicated health care practices, enhancing their genetics, and ensuring they remain the strong, well-tempered companions they were meant to be.

Pugs: Ancient Charm, Modern Companions

The Pug is an ancient breed originating in China around 400 B.C., where it was prized as a companion to emperors and often lived under royal protection. These cherished dogs later spread to Japan, Russia, and eventually to Europe in the 16th century, capturing the hearts of royalty such as Queen Victoria of England and Prince William of Orange. Pugs are small, compact dogs typically weighing between 14 to 18 pounds, with a short, glossy coat that comes in fawn, black, silver, or apricot. They are instantly recognizable by their wrinkled, flat-muzzled faces, expressive eyes, and curled tails. Personality-wise, Pugs are known for being charming, affectionate, and sociable—playful but dignified companions who adapt well to various living environments. Fun fact: Chinese breeders intentionally shaped the wrinkles on a Pug’s forehead to resemble the character for “prince” (王), further emphasizing their royal legacy.

Great Pyrenees: Noble Livestock Guardians

Great Pyrenees are instinctively excellent farm guard dogs and are widely used as livestock guardian dogs (LGDs). They were originally bred in the Pyrenees Mountains between France and Spain to protect flocks from predators like wolves and bears. Their territorial nature, strong protective instincts, and nocturnal vigilance make them ideal for farm settings. While they are also great home guardians and protectors of their Human family, they are best suited for farm homesteads and prefer the outdoors where they can roam freely and protect livestock. They are known for their gentle temperament with animals
and children, but they are fiercely defensive against outside threats

Saint Bernards: Courageous Companions

Saint Bernard’s are better suited as house guard dogs rather than farm guard dogs. They were originally bred for Human rescue work by the hospice of the Great ST Bernard Pass on the Italian-Swiss border. While they have a large, intimidating presence and a deep bark that easily deters intruders. Their gentle temperament towards their Human family makes them excellent family dogs and loyal companions, while they also have strong instincts and excel at watchful protection of their Human family against any outside threats. Saints require 24/7 outdoor access but often prefer spending time indoors.

Adoption Package “

=========================================

It was a great experience working with Walk The Line. They were very informative and accomodating. We drove 3 hours North and they drove 5 hours South to meet us for our adoption. It was also wonderful that they offer a puppy kit, which saved me time and frustration looking for everything that I would need. WTL also provided a health binder with a wealth of pug information. This is my 2nd pug adoption process and I did not get near as much information where I got my first pug from. We adopted a black pug puppy and once we got him home, my Vet checked him out and said that he was in great health. Our “Mugsy” is also very good looking, which I already knew from all the pictures they provided. Mugsy went right to his potty pad the 1st day. He is an awesome addition to our family. If I ever adopt a pug again, I will only go to Walk The Line. They really care about their pugs. Once you adopt from them you become a part of the Walk The Line family because they continue to care! 3/20/2013

“Higher”

is a song by American rock band Creed. It was released on August 24, 1999 as the lead single from their second studio album, Human Clay… Vocalist Scott Stapp and long-time friend Steven Harang wrote the song about the power of lucid dreaming… “Higher” was Creed’s major breakthrough hit which helped to place them firmly in the American mainstream music scene…

Register your dog, cat or other animal, get therapist letters, IDs, vests & more…                                  What’s the difference between an Emotional Support Animal (ESA) and a Service Dog? Emotional Support Animals (ESA) are animals that provide therapeutic benefits to their owner through affection and companionship… A Service Dog is specially trained to perform a task to help someone with a disability… A seeing eye dog is one example of a Service Dog… Unlike a Service Dog, an emotional support animal does not need specialized training to handle a task… Further, Emotional Support Animals come in different breeds and animal types and are not just limited to dogs, while Service Animals are either dogs or mini horses…

INTRO:

Respectfully, if your interest in acquiring a Pug stems from impulse, bargain-hunting, or convenience rather than a genuine and informed commitment to lifelong care, we kindly advise you to redirect your search… Walk The Line Pug Ranch is not for casual shoppers nor for those unwilling or unable—whether financially, physically, or time-wise—to provide a deserving Pug with the responsible home, health care, and daily attention they require… Additionally, if the extent of your inquiry is simply, “How much are your Pugs?” we must be honest in saying that this question, absent context or care, disregards decades of our hard work and is not deserving of a response…

At Walk The Line, every potential Pug adoptive parent is required to engage in a comprehensive, confidential screening process… This includes the completion of a thoughtfully constructed Pug ownership questionnaire—a secure, interactive online form designed not just for vetting but for mutual benefit… It helps us understand your lifestyle, preferences, and preparedness, while giving you a clearer picture of the lifelong journey you’re considering… Prior to any adoption, it’s also essential to establish a personalized veterinary protocol with your chosen DVM or with a WTL-recommended DVM to ensure each Pug’s transition is supported from day one…

Families who reach out to Walk The Line do so because they’re seeking more than just a Pug—they want mentorship from an experienced breeder, not guesswork from an amateur or heartbreak from a high-volume operation… Our responsibility is to ensure each of our carefully bred, well-socialized, immune-sufficient Pugs is placed only into homes that demonstrate equal responsibility and readiness…

Walk The Line is not a Quick Mart, not a K-Mart, not a Stop & Shop, not a convenience store, certainly not a pet shop, and most definitely not a puppy mill… So please don’t ask us to behave like one… We do not run gimmicky promotions, flash discounts, or limited-time offers… We don’t do “sales.” What we do offer is a highly selective and heritage-based breeding program built on well proven Ancient Chinese Breeding Methods, producing healthy, long-lived, emotionally balanced, purebred Pugs… Considering the depth and value of our adoption packages, our fees are not only fair—they’re moderate compared to most any reputable breeders, and markedly less than those charged by profit-driven pet stores… In certain cases, our adult Pug adoption packages may begin at around $495, and in some instances, adult Pugs may be placed for even less—when the fit and circumstances are right…

Since the year 2000, Walk The Line Pug Ranch has devoted itself to the research, practice, and refinement of Pug anatomy, responsible breeding, preventative health care, therapy dog training, and the preservation of the Pug’s Original Ancient Chinese lineage… This isn’t our hobby—it’s a mission, a legacy, and a promise to both the Pug Breed and the families who become part of it…

_____________________________

A WTL adoption package begins with the most important foundation: the placement of an exceptionally healthy, responsibly bred, and well-socialized purebred Pug… Each of our Pugs is the result of decades of dedication, raised through the careful application of a time-tested and genetically sound “throwing” method—an Ancient Chinese Breeding practice that has been used successfully in China for thousands of years… This method prioritizes long-term genetic stability, immune sufficiency, and emotional balance… It’s the same wisdom passed down through generations of royal dog stewards in China and embraced by Walk The Line since the year 2000…

For the history-minded among our prospective families, the Pug’s origin story is steeped in nobility… In Ancient China, the earliest form of the Pug—then referred to as the “Ha Pa” or “Foo Dog”—was noticeably different in size and shape than today’s version… These early Pugs were larger, more athletic, and initially bred as hunting companions reserved exclusively for men of Chinese royalty… However, as time passed, royal women grew enamored with the breed’s charismatic personality and affectionate disposition, favoring them as lap dogs and companions… This shift in purpose led to the Pug becoming both a breed of desire and eventually a commodified symbol of status… The Chinese and others such as the Dutch and the British worked diligently in an effort to enhance the Breed in order to improve the quality/durability as well as looks, and therefore increase the value of the Breed…

News of the Pug’s unique charm and royal favor soon reached far beyond China… Countries such as Holland, Great Britain, Portugal, and the Netherlands took a keen interest in this endearing breed… Dutch traders, in particular, played a pivotal role in introducing the Pug to Europe, where breeding standards began to evolve in order to enhance both appearance and durability… The Pug arrived in the United States shortly after the Civil War and was officially recognized by the American Kennel Club as a purebred breed in 1885… Decades later, in 1931, the formation of “The Pug Club of America” solidified the breed’s standing in American dog culture and became the Parent Club for Pug advocacy and education… For those wishing to dive deeper into the breed’s fascinating journey from royal hunting companion to beloved family member, our full history is shared under the “PUG HISTORY” tab…

Walk The Line Pug Ranch has remained committed to preserving the breed’s distinguished heritage while enhancing its genetic health and emotional soundness… Through the continued use of the Ancient Chinese Breeding Method, we’ve developed a unique and time-honored approach that focuses not just on producing aesthetically pleasing dogs, but on creating immune-strong, behaviorally balanced, and family-ready Pugs that uphold the principles of the Breed’s original legacy… For a full description of our breeding practice and results, visit our browser tab “PUGS OF DISTINCTION…”

Every WTL Pug adoption includes a three-day comprehensive health guarantee covering any general illness, providing immediate post-possession protection and peace of mind…
  2. Fourteen-Day Congenital Defect Guarantee
In addition, WTL provides a fourteen-day unconditional congenital defect guarantee, covering any early-onset hereditary or developmental issues diagnosed within the first two weeks of adoption…
  3. Two-Year to Ten-Year Extended Congenital Defect Guarantee
WTL offers a standard two-year congenital defect health guarantee, which may be extended up to ten years contingent upon pre-adoption and post-adoption veterinary cooperation. Specifically:
    • The Pug Adoptive Parent (PAO) and their licensed veterinarian must establish and agree to WTL’s recommended PPID Pug Health Care Protocol prior to adoption.
    • Within three business days post-adoption, the PAO’s DVM must conduct a full examination to approve or disapprove the Pug’s immediate health condition.
    • This extended guarantee remains valid only if the ongoing vetting follows the mutually agreed PPID Protocol as closely as possible.
  4. Protocol Flexibility for Medical Exceptions
Should the PAO’s veterinarian determine that deviation from the established PPID Protocol is warranted due to:
    • Sudden environmental exposure or infestation
    • The emergence of a specific illness or condition
    • An unforeseen emergency
    • Any Pug or human life-threatening circumstance
then the protocol may be adjusted accordingly, without invalidating the extended health guarantee.
  5.  WTL’s PPID Health Care Protocol Reference
The PPID Protocol, formulated in line with the latest standards by the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) and the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA), is available under the “PPID Protocol” tab on our website… It may be requested prior to adoption or accessed anytime by contracted WTL adoptive parents…

4] All standard Vetting & General Health Care UTD:

  • Routine Veterinary Oversight                                                                Each Pug receives a minimum of one formal veterinary examination, accompanied by Walk The Line’s in-house Vet Tech Protocol—an established regimen of daily visual and tactile health inspections performed by trained caretakers for early detection of any anomalies.
  • Specialized or Case-Specific Medical Care
If a Pug requires any non-routine or individualized medical treatments, diagnostic procedures, or urgent care prior to adoption, a complete record is maintained. This includes a full description of all findings, treatments administered, medications dispensed, and veterinary recommendations.
  • Core Vaccinations and Parasite Protocols
In alignment with the AAHA (American Animal Hospital Association) and Walk The Line standards, each Pug receives all necessary core canine virus inoculations (DAPPv) and rabies vaccinations. De-worming and parasite prevention treatments are performed on schedule, with all relevant dates and dosages documented in the health record.
  • Non-Core Vaccine Philosophy
Walk The Line does not utilize or recommend non-core vaccines—nor heartworm and tick-prevention drug protocols—in typical Northeastern environments unless a rare endemic circumstance or verified infestation warrants it. Instead, we promote a responsible, holistic approach:
  • 2–3 times per year preventive blood and stool testing
  • PAO education on environmental avoidance and hygiene
  • Building immune strength through proper nutrition, mental enrichment, and exercise
We strictly avoid chemically aggressive regimens that may compromise long-term immune health, and prefer informed abstinence and immunity support over dependency on what we call “killer drugs.”
  • Grooming and Hygiene Maintenance
All required grooming is handled pre-adoption, including bathing, oral hygiene, nail trimming, ear cleaning, and jowl inspection. Each Pug arrives clean, fresh, and properly maintained.
  • Final Pre-Adoption Vet Clearance
Normally within 24 to 72 hours prior to adoption, Walk The Line arranges a final health screening performed by one of our hired New York State-licensed veterinarians. If any concerns are flagged, we immediately contact the adoptive parent(s) to discuss the issue and reach a mutually agreed plan of action—whether that includes additional care, rescheduling, or further evaluation.
  • Complete Preventative Health Record
Every adoptive parent receives a fully detailed veterinary record, formatted for easy access by any licensed DVM. It includes all dates, vaccination details, parasite prevention protocols, diagnostic notes, and grooming history to ensure a seamless transition into lifelong care.

5] Black Gold Natural Grain Free Dog Food Starter:

Every Walk The Line Pug adoption—regardless of age—comes with a premium starter supply of nutrition: a provision of 15-pound Black Gold Pug Puppy Chow or Adult Chow, tailored case-by-case to the specific needs of your adoptive Pug… This isn’t just a gesture of goodwill—it’s a carefully designed nutritional transition strategy, developed to minimize the intense stress that often accompanies the adoption and acclimation process… When transferred into a new environment, Pugs can experience significant disruptions in their eating, drinking, sleeping, and social routines… Of these, hydration is most critical… Dehydration remains the number one threat to young puppies livelihood, often triggered by disrupted feeding habits and emotional stress…
To mitigate this risk, Walk The Line customizes each departing Pug’s food blend as necessary, taking into account their preferences, health status, and behavioral tendencies… The nutritional foundation is normally built upon the highly digestible, immune-supportive Black Gold formula… From there, we add supplemental ingredients as necessary—canine kibble blends, human-grade food elements, targeted vitamins, and other appropriate nutritional boosters—on an individualized basis, all designed to maintain appetite and ensure gut stability… This personalized feeding approach is not optional; it’s a protected element of your Pug’s health guarantee contract, grounded in our belief that thoughtful care begins the moment your Pug leaves our hands…
To better understand our feeding philosophies and ongoing dietary recommendations, please visit our website browser tab titled “PUG CHOW…” And if you have questions about a particular formula, ingredient, or chow transition plan, we always welcome direct communication…

6) AKC / UKC / NGKC Pug Puppy Registration Papers

All of Walk The Line’s new Pug litters are eligible for registration through several prominent kennel clubs, including:
AKC – American Kennel Club
UKC – United Kennel Club
NGKC – National Grade Kennel Club
ACA – American Canine Association
CKC – Continental Kennel Club

Registration eligibility is determined on a case-specific basis, depending on the puppy’s heritage and Walk The Line’s verified DNA lineage mapping. Each pup may fall within one of three genetic categories:

   Chinese

    American

    Chinese-American hybrid

When opted for, standard restricted-use registration papers are included as part of the official Walk The Line Pug Puppy Adoption Package… These forms are issued once the Pug Adoptive Parent (PAO) submits documented proof of spay/neuter—according to the terms set forth in the WTL/PAO Adoption Agreement—and within the designated age guidelines outlined in that legal contract… Upon receipt, WTL mails the appropriate registration paperwork via USPS First Class Mail...

Depending on the pup’s heritage and the registry selected, additional charges may apply for porcessing and fulfillment of registration documentation…

Once the PAO receives the registration form, the process is simple:

1. Select your puppy’s official Kennel Club name

2. Complete the form and submit it online or by mail

3. Include the required estimated $50 registration fee

Your Pug will then be officially registered for life with the kennel club of your choosing.

A complete pedigree profile is also available upon request for an additional fee—either through Walk The Line directly or the applicable kennel club, case specific…

All Walk The Line Pugs are strictly purebred, raised under rigorous genetic standards that ensure a healthy, disease-free, and congenital defect-free lineage—supported by an 2-year extendable up to 10-year Congenital Health Guarantee… Unlike hybrids or mixed breeds—which we consider to be genetic mismatches often fraught with health challenges—Walk The Line believes that only well-orchestrated, heritage-based pure breeding produces puppies of enduring soundness and vitality and lack of congenital defects…

Because of irresponsible and historically improper breeding methods practiced elsewhere, Walk The Line rarely provides registration papers with breeding rights… However, unrestricted registration documentation may be available on a case-by-case basis, but only transferred to individuals who pass our stringent Pug Adoption Application Process and demonstrate a verifiable history of ethical, experienced, and well-prepared breeding practices…

7) WTL Microchip Policy and Position

WTL currently does not favor the routine practice of Microchipping for the Purebred Pug… Instead WTL promotes the more modern and much safer methods of tracking such as GPS Trackers, Air Tags, Bluetooth ID Tags, Etc…

As of August 19, 2016, Walk The Line Pug Ranch has made a conscientious and carefully researched decision to discontinue the practice of pre-implanting microchips into our Pugs prior to adoption… This policy change reflects our commitment to maintaining the highest standards in breed welfare and our continuous efforts to stay current with best practices in breeding, veterinary care, inoculation schedules, parasite prevention, training, rescue, and overall Pug health management…

As a Reputable & Responsible Pug Breeder, WTL actively engages in ongoing study of canine health and genetics and we also collaborate closely with veterinarians, veterinary technicians, and professionals across the Pug community… After weighing multiple factors, including data from our trusted industry sources, we concluded that the risks and drawbacks of mandatory microchipping outweigh its benefits, particularly within the context of the Pug breed…

That said, for adoptive parents (PAOs) who after consultation with their personal veterinarian potentially still make an informed choice to microchip, we recommend AKC ReUnite because, in our past microchipping experience, their chip manufacturing integrity and registry reliability surpass others in the industry… However, the implantation decision should be made only after thoughtful research and professional advice. PAOs are strongly encouraged to:

  • Consult their chosen veterinarian regarding the pros and cons
  • Understand the medical risks (though rare) and behavioral considerations
  • Submit the registration paperwork after implantation to ensure inclusion in the lost/stolen dog registry

It is important to note that an unregistered chip is functionally useless—industry statistics show that over 62% of dog owners who implant chips never complete registration, making reunification in the event of a loss virtually impossible…

WTL maintains that responsible companionship and daily supervision are more reliable safeguards against loss or theft than microchipping or tags are alone… A well-trained Pug should never be unsupervised outdoors and should be accompanied or monitored by alert systems indoors… Therefore, we believe the average domestic Pug—with proper human care and supervision—should not be at risk of becoming lost…

Our position is informed by a broad compilation of experiences, veterinarian dialogue, industry statistics, and ethical considerations… While we respect the broader veterinary and shelter community’s stance (as many still support microchipping per AAHA and Humane Society protocols)

If you’d like to explore this subject further or require guidance on what to consider before implantation, we’re happy to discuss the topic in more detail… For extended information, please refer to the complete explanation of microchipping further down this page—or contact us directly…

Thank you for your understanding and thoughtful attention to this matter…
–– Walk The Line Pug Ranch

8) Free Delivery Policy & Transit Protocol

Walk The Line Pug Ranch is committed to ensuring every adoption experience is not only personal, but safe, respectful, and tailored to individual circumstances… In select cases, we offer free delivery of your adoptive Pug within approximately a two-hour radius of our location for qualified individuals—particularly those with disabilities or unique personal hardships… These arrangements are considered on a case-specific basis and must be discussed in advance during the adoption process…

For families located beyond that radius, delivery throughout the Northeastern United States and beyond may also be available, also on a case-by-case basis, at an additional rate of $1.00 per mile... This ensures that delivery remains affordable while compensating for travel, care, and coordination…

However, Walk The Line does not and will never ship a Pug unattended… Whether ground transportation or air travel is involved, your Pug will be personally escorted by either a qualified Walk The Line representative or a verified representative of the adoptive family… At no point will a Pug travel alone or be subjected to impersonal shipping conditions… We believe that adoption marks the beginning of a lifelong bond—and that bond should begin with a responsible, hand-to-hand exchange, ensuring that the Pug is transferred directly and safely between Walk The Line and one or more approved adoptive parents…

This personal approach reinforces our commitment to welfare and emotional stability—especially during the delicate transfer and acclimation period… It’s part of our promise to uphold ethical standards while treating every Pug with the dignity and care they deserve…

9) Pug Health Care Dissertation – Professional Veterinary-Based Consultation

Every Walk The Line Pug adoption includes access to a professional, comprehensive veterinary-trained Pug health care dissertation, delivered personally via a scheduled telephone consultation prior to adoption… This one-on-one session provides a deep dive into essential Pug wellness topics, tailored to your specific concerns, questions, and preparedness level… Our goal is to ensure you feel fully informed and confident in meeting your Pug’s long-term health care needs…

During the dissertation, we cover foundational health recommendations including:

  • Nutritional strategy and feeding schedules
  • Hydration monitoring and digestive care
  • Vaccination guidance (core protocols and case-specific recommendations)
  • Parasite prevention techniques
  • Environmental risks and seasonal care precautions
  • Grooming routines and skin-fold hygiene
  • Early detection signs for congenital issues or breed-specific ailments
  • Behavioral support and mental health enrichment

Additional time is always provided to allow you to ask specific questions and explore targeted health concerns such as orthopedic support, allergy management, immune system optimization, and age-appropriate wellness protocols… You’re never rushed—this isn’t a brief overview; it’s an open dialogue rooted in education and support…

Follow-up assistance is also available during the adoption transfer, should any additional clarification be needed in person… This dissertation reflects Walk The Line’s belief that every Pug deserves not just a loving home, but a well-informed one, and that each adoptive parent is empowered through knowledge and proactive planning…

10) Comprehensive Pug Vetting, Health Care & General Information Package

Walk The Line Pug Ranch provides each adoptive family with a highly curated and educational Pug Health Care and Information Package, developed to serve as a lifelong reference guide for responsible ownership… This package reflects over two decades of our firsthand breeding experience since 2000, coupled with expert knowledge contributed by both affiliated and independent veterinarians and Pug health care professionals… It includes thoroughly compiled resources on topics such as:

13) 🛡️Walk The Line’s Recommended Parasite Prevention, Inoculation, & De-Worming Protocol

This page is dedicated to helping our Adoptive Parents understand and implement a responsible, breed-specific veterinary protocol, grounded in both science and experience…Walk The Line Pug Ranch has developed its recommended protocols using:

  • The latest guidelines from the AAHA (American Animal Hospital Association) and AVMA (American Veterinary Medical Association)
  • Over two decades of direct experience with all ages of Pugs since 2000
  • Collaboration with multiple licensed veterinarians, vet techs, and private mentors
  • Firsthand breeding, training, and rearing expertise unique to the heritage and genetics of the Pugs we raise

We recognize that within veterinary medicine there are legitimate debates regarding the timing, necessity, and risks associated with non-core vaccines and drugs (e.g., Leptospirosis, Coronavirus, Bordetella, Heartworm, Lyme disease preventatives, etc.)… That’s why our recommendations are customized per case, not based on generic templates…

🧬 The PPID Protocol: What Makes It Different? Every applicant begins with our PPID Pug Health Care Protocol, which is:

  • Specifically tailored to the Purebred Pug breed
  • Adjusted for the unique geography and lifestyle concerns of the Northeast United States
  • Developed only after extensive internal review of your Pug’s heritage, DNA profile, breeding background, health record, and individual needs

While outside veterinarians may be highly trained, they cannot know the details of your pup’s specific lineage and developmental history—which Walk The Line knows intimately… Therefore, we respectfully insist that all prospective Adoptive Parents participate in a two- or three-way consultation between:

1. The Adoptive Parent (PAO)

2. WTL representatives

3. The PAO’s licensed, primary DVM (not a vet tech, office manager, or assistant)

This dialogue ensures that the pre-adoption health platform is custom-built for home, lifestyle, and veterinary philosophy…📝

Disclaimer: This protocol is provided by WTL for educational purposes only and is not a substitute for direct veterinary care by your DVM… All decisions post-adoption are subject to the PAO’s discretion and their veterinarian’s recommendations…

🤝 Establishing the Pug Care Team & Post-Adoption Commitment Once this cooperative plan has been established, the PAO, WTL, and your DVM form what we call the Adjoined Pug Care Team—a unified structure that supports your Pug’s lifelong wellness… This ensures that your Pug benefits from:

  • The premium genetic quality and early-life foundation provided by WTL
  • The tailored, ongoing care guided by your trusted veterinarian
  • The breed-specific expertise and lifelong consultation access offered freely by Walk the Line

🗂️ All materials—including the customized PPID Protocol and our Comprehensive Pug Health Guide—are delivered in both printed form at adoption and electronically via email… After adoption:

  • Your primary DVM leads the ongoing health platform, adjusting as needed
  • WTL steps back from decision-making, but remains available 24/7 for free advice, review, and guidance before making any non-emergency changes to the pre-established health plan

🧭 Why It Matters: WTL believes this model sets a new standard in ethical adoption:

  • Breeders take full responsibility for the dogs they produce
  • Vets align protocols to individualized case data
  • Owners become educated, empowered, and actively engaged

If this collaborative, high-responsibility approach doesn’t align with your expectations—or your veterinarian’s—it’s important to acknowledge that adoption through Walk The Line may not be the right path for you… For those who choose to join this mission, we welcome you into a circle of truly committed caregivers whose only goal is to give Pugs the long, joyful lives they deserve…

Should You Microchip Your Small Breed Dog?

Should You Microchip Your Small Breed Dog?

For every happy homecoming tale of a microchipped dog, there is another person advising of the dangers to their dog’s health because of the chip.    What is a new dog owner to do?

There are many happy stories of dogs who get lost, run away or get separated from their owners to find their way back home because the owner took the time to microchip. Most veterinarians recommend them and virtually all rescue organizations and human societies implant them in a dog who is being adopted.

Unfortunately, only implanting a dog or puppy with a microchip is not going to save his life and, in fact, there are some sad cases where the dog was microchipped, but still euthanized by animal shelters without the knowledge of the dog’s owner.  A microchip will not bring a stolen puppy back to his owner.  This is not a panacea for the happy return of all lost or stolen dogs.

Dogs are not the only animals being microchipped.  Cats, Zoo Animals, birds, reptiles, ferrets, and just about any animal can be implanted even fish.

What is the Law?

There are many countries that are now making it law that dogs be microchipped.   Currently dog are required to be microchipped in Portugal, Singapore, and Bangkok and dogs in England will be required by 2016.

Some states in the U.S. are moving towards a mandatory law as well; some such as El Paso and Los Angeles County, have already passed ordinances stating that dogs residing in their jurisdictions be microchipped.

What it is

At a size equal to a grain of rice, Microchips are injected under the skin of a puppy or adult dog between his shoulder blades.  They use what is called, passive Radio Frequency Identification technology, where passive means that the chip is inactive or inert until an appropriate scanner activates it and displays a number.  It is not a GPS and cannot be used to locate a lost animal.

How is it implanted?

Most veterinarians and animal shelters are capable of implanting these tiny chips, as well as rescue organizations and some breeders.

Although the needle is larger than one used for vaccines, the shot usually does not bother most dogs.  Puppies that are 6 weeks or older can be microchipped, but small dogs are usually too small to chip at that age.  The American Kennel Club recommends that the puppy weigh least 2 pounds before being implanted.

Chips are implanted between the shoulder blades just under the skin.   People worry about whether there will be pain.

Most dogs tolerate the injection, but since the size of the needle is very large, (12 gauge) the dog is going to feel the prick more so than he would a simple vaccination with a tiny needle (25 gauge).  Needles are numbered where the higher the number, the smaller the needle.  No anesthesia is necessary, but some veterinarians will give the dog a little local numbing to reduce the stress.  Luckily, they generally last a life time, so it is a one-time deal.

The veterinarian or technician will scan the dog first to be sure there isn?t already a chip implanted.  They will check the bar code on the microchip, inject it into the animal just as if it were a vaccine or subcutaneous shot and then recheck to be sure the number can be read by a scanner.

Registering

Once inserted, you will need to register your chip.  Each microchip comes with registration paperwork that can be mailed in or completed online.  There is usually a fee, and you will need to renew your information should you move or the animal is transferred to a new owner.  An inserted microchip is useless unless the owner registers with one of many agencies designed to collect the owner?s information and microchip number.

Costs

According to Petfinder.com, the average price to microchip a dog in the United States is $45.00; however, this is only an estimate depending on where you live and who is implanting the chip.  Sometimes, humane society or even a breeder can do the procedure for less. Some municipalities that offer low cost vaccines may throw in free microchips, so it is worth watching for these events in your community.   This upfront cost may or may not cover the cost to register the microchip.  Registration fees are usually separate and paid to the chip?s manufacturer.

When owners decide whether they are going to have their animals? microchipped, they must understand that it is a two-step process.  First, the cost to implant a chip, usually performed by a veterinarian, and then the cost to register the chip, which is often the task given to the owner.  Sometimes, the veterinarian will charge a flat fee and take care of registering the chip.  If money is an issue, ask about costs before continuing with the procedure.

There are some companies that are now allowing people to register their animal for free.  Found Animals Foundation is one such registry that will allow you to sign up, register and maintain your records for free.

 Problems

Microchips come in three different frequencies.  The frequency of a microchip refers to the type of signal emitted by a scanner to activate and read the microchip.  The microchip does not have a power source and can only be read by a scanner capable of picking up the chip?s frequency.  So, the person or agency reading the microchip must have the correct scanner.

The three microchip frequencies in the United States are:

  • 125 kHz
  • 128 kHz
  • 134.2 kHz

The 134.2 kHz is the International Standards Organization (or ISO) standard and is the primary frequency used worldwide. It is also the one that has been endorsed by Professional groups including the American Veterinary Medical Association, the American Animal Hospital Association, and the National Standards Institute (ANSI).  The 125 kHz microchip is still dominates the industry.

Problem with Scanners

There are currently several types of scanners currently in use which also complicates the picture in the U.S. Forward-reading scanners only detect 134.2 kHz (ISO standard) microchips but will not detect 125 kHz or 128 kHz (non-ISO standard) microchips. Universal scanners, also called forward- and backward-reading scanners, identify all microchip frequencies. The main advantage of using a universal scanner is that it improves the chance of being able to read any microchip, regardless of the frequency and the chip?s manufacturer.

Unfortunately, not all humane societies, rescues and animal shelters or veterinarians own a universal scanner.

Poor scanning techniques may also fail to locate a microchip.  There have also been instances where the microchip migrated away from the insertion site and was not found by the humane society personnel.

Now, let?s assume you have microchipped your dog, and he gets lost.  A kind person finds him and takes him to his local vet.  The veterinarian scans for and finds a microchip.  Now what?

No Universal Database

At this time, there is not one database in the U.S. for registering microchips.   Unlike many countries, the U.S. has not adopted the ISO standard, so each microchip company maintains its own registry and there are many companies out there competing for your business.

In 2009, the American Animal Hospital Association set up an internet based tool, the Universal Pet Microchip Lookup Tool which provides a listing of the manufacturer with which the microchip’s code is associated as well as if the chip information is found in participating registries.

The key word here is “participating” meaning that not all microchip companies elect to participate in the program.  It is available to anyone: veterinarians, humane organization, or pet owner to search the different registries.  The tool does not provide owner information. For that information, the person using the tool will need to contact the manufacturer associated with the chip.

There are a few free databases that are not directly associated with a specific manufacturer, but many of these agencies are still available in the Universal Lookup Tool

Health Risk to Your Dog

Usually there are no problems associated with microchipping a pet.  However, there have been some reports of microchips causing cancer, inflammation and problems at the site of insertion.  Relatively rare, dog owners should be aware that microchipping their dog is not completely risk free.

According to Dr. Karen Becker from Mercola, there have been two cases of sarcoma or fibrosarcoma have been reported in the veterinary literature.  Additionally, between 1996 and 2006, up to 10% of laboratory mice and rats had a reaction to the microchip which ranged from a localized inflammation to tumor formation.  At this time, there is not a clear understanding as to why cancer is occurring in lab mice rats and dogs.

In the January/February 2011 issue of Dogs Naturally magazine, a tiny 6 week old Tibetan terrier suffered neurological damage as a result of a microchip.

In another case, a three-year-old female Yorkshire terrier, who had been microchipped 3 years prior, developed severe lameness and could not bear weight on her front left leg.  The muscles in her leg were wasting away, and a x-ray revealed that the implanted chip had lodged in her spinal column.

Should You Microchip Your Dog?

The real reason people microchip their dog is the peace of mind knowing that if he gets lost, he has a higher chance of being reunited with you.  There are definite risks, and no system is fool proof.

Before making a decision, consider your own dog?

  • Does your dog spend most of his time in your home?
  • Is he only allowed out on a leash or within a securely fenced area?  Do you supervise all outdoor time?
  • Does he come immediately when called?
  • Has he been trained to Wait at the door rather than bolting out the minute the door opens?
  • Do you live in an area where  implantation is not required by law?

If you answered yes to all of the above, perhaps your dog does not need a microchip.

But, if your dog does not consistently come when you call, gets loose from his collar, darts away each time a squirrel climbs a tree, or bolts out the front door at any chance he gets, he might be a good candidate.

Additionally if you travel regularly with your dog, it might be a good idea, especially if your travel plans include visits to countries where microchips are required.

The best advice is buyer beware.  Do your research before making any final decision and as a small dog owner, be sure your puppy is big enough to handle implantation and understand the risks.

{RESPONSIBLE PUG OWNERSHIP}

Walk The Line Pug Ranch

Before making a final decision regarding Pug ownership, we ask that you approach it with thoughtful deliberation and family-wide consensus… Everyone in your household should be in agreement—and more importantly, in harmony—with welcoming a Pug into your lives… Becoming the adoptive parent of a Pug can be a joyful and rewarding experience… These animals are among the most affectionate, playful, intelligent, and emotionally attuned companions a human can have… But the experience will only be truly positive if you are properly educated, genuinely prepared, and wholeheartedly committed…

To be clear, owning a Pug is much like caring for a child… These dogs require daily emotional engagement, physical care, social structure, and medical attention… They thrive in homes that are equipped to nurture their health and temperament… A Pug can bring years of laughter and love, but only when the environment is suitable and the adoptive parent(s) are mentally, physically, and financially able to meet the breed’s needs…

So first ask yourself: Is the Pug the right breed for you?
To help answer that, please explore the tab labeled “The Pug Breed” on our website… It provides insights into the Pug’s behavior, physical needs, grooming requirements, and challenges—all of which should be understood before proceeding…

Second—and most importantly—adoptive parents must have at least a foundational understanding of Pug health care and maintenance, or be willing to learn… That’s where Walk The Line comes in… We’ll provide you with an immaculately bred, healthy Pug and pair that with extensive health guidance, care manuals, and ongoing support… But we can only help those who are willing to listen, engage, and apply what they’ve learned… We will walk with you every step of the way, offering advice and real-time care assistance throughout the life of your Pug—but the day-to-day responsibility is yours…

You must have an appropriate home, ample time, and the financial means to provide proper training, enrichment, medical care, and the general upkeep required… Only if you can show you are prepared for this long-term commitment will Walk The Line consider helping you select the Pug most appropriate to your lifestyle… That selection process is mutual—and tailored to help you find a dog you’ll cherish for years to come…

Before you finalize that decision, we urge you to look beyond superficial questions like :What’s the price of your Pugs?” the price is only one detail in a much broader evaluation. Ask Instead:

  • Does the breeder use a proven, ethical breeding method—and if so, what is it?
  • What standards of health and temperament does the breeder uphold?
  • What veterinary care, inoculations, and screenings has the Pug received?
  • What is the breeder’s background, education, and experience?
  • Will the breeder provide health care information and post-adoption support?
  • Is there a health guarantee?
  • Will the breeder step in to help, if an unforeseen life change affects your ability to care for the Pug?

Only after answering these questions should price be considered… And if you compare all these factors, you’ll find that Walk The Line’s adoption fees are not just fair—they are deeply reflective of our responsibility, care, and lifelong partnership… We are confident you’ll discover that we’re not only one of the most responsible breeders in America—we’re one of the best…

Finally, adopting a Pug should be a thoughtful, heartfelt decision made together as a family—not a reaction to emotions, trends, convenience, or circumstance… Please do not adopt based on fleeting desires, budget pressure, social influence, sudden grief, or geographical convenience… Those are the very decisions that contribute to the overpopulation of homeless pets and place unnecessary burden on animal shelters across this country…

We honor and financially support the shelter system—they are doing heroic work… But we believe that the best way to support their mission is to ensure each adoption from Walk The Line is responsible, permanent, and rooted in love, not impulse…

Registration & Pedigree Information

Walk The Line Pug’s and Hard Rock Farm’s Noble Giants litters are eligible for official registration based on their purebred heritage. Registrations may be processed through AKC Kennel Club. (United States) the United Kennel Club, (Internationally) CKC Kennel Club, (Canada) or the National General Kennel Club (China), (standard restricted use).

Registration papers are included as a standard part of our Puppy Adoption Packages, provided upon initial request and in compliance with the terms outlined in the case-specific WTL or HRF Adoption Contract. In instances where a spay/neuter agreement is required, registration documents will only be released upon full compliance with that agreement.

Once the adoptive family has submitted all required documentation and the puppy has reached the appropriate age (per the adoption agreement), registration papers are sent via regular U.S. Mail. Additionally, full pedigrees are available upon request and assessed case-by-case for an additional fee.

Commitment to Purebred Excellence

Our canines are strictly purebred, coming from bloodlines that are exceptionally healthy, free of disease, and devoid of congenital defects. Despite common misconceptions, hybrids and mixed breeds often introduce unpredictable and undesirable genetic complications. Only through a well-orchestrated and conscientious purebred breeding program can we ensure the healthiest, most immune-efficient, and genetically sound offspring.

Due to the widespread misuse and irresponsible breeding practices common in the industry, we rarely offer registration papers with breeding rights. However, unrestricted registration may be granted under special circumstances—reserved only for individuals who demonstrate, through our detailed Canine Adoption Application process, either a sound reason or a proven record of responsible breeding experience.

~ Testimonial by Lynda & Kevin Rouser, Massachusetts ~
“We started working with Walk The Line a year ago on the pre-adoption of two puppies. The level of attention and devotion they showed was unparalleled, as if we were the only adoptive family with whom they were working. Their knowledge about the breed and best health care practices are unsurpassed. The gallery was a constant source of delight and amazement as we watched our girls grow from newborns to the 10-wk old wonders we picked up in August, 2012. We could not be more pleased with our decision to pursue an adoption through Walk The Line; our girls are remarkably healthy, spunky, sweet-natured, and simply gorgeous. It was well worth the eight-hour drive to pick them up, and they were gracious enough to spend as much time as we needed to review the comprehensive binder and materials that are included as part of their adoption package. We do not hesitate in recommending and/or referring others to Walk The Line. Thanks for bringing so much joy into our lives! ”

The best of the best! Lynda
